For investors, the best European vacation right now might be an escape from the havoc the continent’s problems have been wreaking on U.S. financial markets.
All summer, investors have been force-fed a mountain of bad economic news from the region. Staggering levels of debt held by several European nations especially Greece make the odds of defaults by entire nations increasingly likely. Big European banks are faced with the possibility of owning large pieces of debt, issued by European nations, that take a huge hit to their values. And the looming economic quagmire in Europe is hardly a help at a time U.S. economic activity is sluggish, at best.
The ramifications for U.S. investors are staggering. For the first time in recent memory, Europe isn’t just a playground for vacationers. Instead, unfolding events there are holding U.S. markets hostage and threatening to unseat long-held investing truisms.
Europe is filling many investors with “never-ending fear. Read more…

It is ebb tide in the Hamptons. Families are returning to the city or suburb whence they came, and their children are busy with play dates and soccer games and piano practice. The locals are glad to reclaim the roads and beaches, enjoying a solitude warmer than the autumn ocean. September and October may be the most beautiful months in the Hamptons or the world with pastel skies, open tennis courts, and still, starry nights. As a resident, this precious season makes for smooth sailing; as a restaurant owner, one needs a fancy flutter kick to keep afloat.
We toyed with the idea of introducing Sunday Brunch and Vegetarian Monday and Lobster Wednesday. Each one would require prices lower than our weekend $68 prix fixe, but money was not the trigger we wanted to keep the restaurant humming, the staff employed and the word-of-mouth awatering. When we put all of the notions down on paper, it appeared more like a maze than a menu. Our collective heads were spinning.

This just in:
“Norton by Symantec will be hosting a free, four-day cyber safety event in Yonge & Dundas Square in Toronto from October 6-9th to engage the public in conversations about online criminal activity and safety.
The final day of the Expo, Sunday, October 9th, will be dedicated to educating small business owners and entrepreneurs on managing and protecting finances, reputation and business critical information online. Workshops led by Symantec experts will provide small business owners with the tools they need to help protect their businesses from cyber threats.
In addition to small business workshops, the Norton Cyber Safety Expo will feature a giant representation of the Norton Cybercrime Index (CCI), a free tool that measures and warns the public about real-time cybercrime happening around the world and how it can affect them.

I saw an offer the other day, on the web of course, something with a normal price of $495.00 knocked down to $19.95. I thought to myself that nobody would ever buy something offered with that patently absurd insult to intelligence.
But I’m pretty sure people do. I learned that the hard way.
I once decided to overrule a direct mail marketing expert, who I had hired, and send out a direct mail campaign for a software product priced at $100 instead of $99.95. He was a real expert too, but I thought I knew my market, and my customers, better than he did. I didn’t.
And spam? Every so often I wonder how spam still exists. Who can be so naïve as to click on those emails and buy the stupid stuff the spammers offer? Is there anybody left? Obviously the answer is yes, because the spam keeps coming. So somebody buys it, right? Or else it wouldn’t be worth sending?
Somebody must buy that stuff. Go figure.

In case you haven’t seen it yet, the Pew Research Center just released a very interesting report that takes a look at how people learn about local communities and where they go first for information. In the report are many valuable insights for small business owners to learn from and potentially incorporate into their marketing mix. In case you don’t have time to read the whole document or just want the highlights, below are four stats I think every small business owner should know.
1. The Internet is the top source for information about restaurants and other local businesses.
If you’re of the ilk that believes small business owners don’t need a website or a presence on social media, I’d really like you to read that again. Here, I’ll even write it again.
The Internet is the top source for information about restaurants and other local businesses.
Because of the Web’s ability to sort and collect data, more and more users are going online to seek out reviews and recommendations for where they should eat or which businesses they should check out. This represen

If you are scared by the booming industry of doctors and hospitals and fake flu shots — you should be. Every generation opts to undergo ‘cures’ which are not really cures at all, but ridiculous charades with no medical effects whatsoever (except for negative ones). Doctors think they know everything just because they went to medical school, but there’s a whole other world of alternate medicine out there that they don’t want you to know about, just because it’s probably insanely dangerous. Don’t let Big Pharma scare you! You can be scared by these crazy cures instead.
