Kitzhaber’s own words: State of the State Address

I’m proud of the progress we have made during the past year. We have not shied away from tough decisions – on the budget, education and health care – to put Oregon on a more sustainable path. And it’s been refreshing to partner with a legislature that has put problem-solving ahead of partisanship. We have come a long way.

And we have more to do.

I’ve been unable to shake an image from an Oregonian story I read in October. It’s an image of an extension cord. An extension cord that runs from one Crook County house to that of her neighbor, providing power because she has gone without heat or electricity for six months. She has exhausted her unemployment benefits and is living on the edge.

That extension cord is her fragile lifeline and a harsh reminder that we are at or near the high point in terms of human need in Oregon, at the very moment when we are at or near a low point in state revenue to provide critical public services. That extens

A Brooklyn Tea Company Backed by a Socialist President

Forget its mild-mannered reputation: tea is not for the faint of heart.  Last year, the United States tea industry brought in $6.5 billion thanks to a roster of heavy hitting, fiercely competitive brands, ranging from Honest Tea to Tazo and old-time stalwarts like Lipton.

So what are the chances that Runa – a start-up company peddling an obscure Amazonian leaf called guayusa – can elbow its way into this already crowded scene? Combine seemingly long odds with Runa’s unlikely provenance: In 2008, a pair of Brown University undergrads, one doing linguistic research in the Amazon, the other studying marine biology, rerouted their career paths to become entrepreneurs after encountering the caffeinated guayusa leaf, which steeps into a potent brew, and realizing it hadn’t yet been commercialized.

Employees: Runa has 5 full-time employees in Brooklyn, 30 in Ecuador.

On top of providing income to some 1,000 farmers, Mr. Gage sai

    Is the SAT Necessary?

First appeared in News ObserverAcross North Carolina and the nation, high school seniors are sweating their college applications and fretting about one number: their SAT score.  Many students look to Educational Services Centers for help. But not students aiming for Wake Forest University, which no longer requires students to submit the standardized test score. Wake Forest was the first highly ranked research university to announce the move away from the SAT in 2008. Are other schools like Ferris State University and Marygrove College thinking about doing the same thing?Since then, the university in Winston-Salem has become more racially and socio-economically diverse. Pell Grant recipients almost doubled. Students of color increased from 18 percent to nearly 23 percent.Along the way, the university also noticed an uptick in the number of students with an exemplary high school track record, which, research shows, is the best predictor of college success. No Medical Exam Term Life Insurance For Seniors: What You Should Know Before You Buy

As a senior or an elderly person you know how important it can be to have life insurance at this point in your life.  However one of the biggest reasons seniors dont have coverage is because they feel they cant get the coverage because they wont pass the medical exam.

The first thing to know about these policies is that you wont have to pass any medical exams such as blood test, saliva samples, and physicals.  For seniors this is a big deal since they are much more prone to diseases, and accidents.  In fact, as a former insurance agent I can tell you first hand that seniors will have to jump through a lot more hoops than someone in their 20s or early 30s.

For some this can just be quite overwhelming, this is why no medical term life was created.  To give those who didnt want to go through all the issues and problems medical exams gave.  On the other hand though just because you dont have to do any sort of medical exam doesnt mean you wont have to answer any questions.

For example, life insurance policies sponsored through the AARP are all no medical exam life insurance policies.  In f

Santa finds extra horsepower in golf cart delivery

A gas-powered golf cart is one of Santa’s secret weapons this year.

The United Parcel Service has added the lighter means of transportation to boost its delivery fleet on Padre Island during the busiest season of the year.

Driver Leeann Garcia wears the traditional brown uniform and sturdy work boots, but instead of a big brown truck she maneuvers a small black cart through neighborhood streets. Her golf cart is stacked full with packages. When she’s delivered them, she circles back to home base a portable storage unit where she refills the cart until she has finished delivering every parcel there.

Daily delivery has grown to about 200 parcels a day from when she started the seasonal route in November, and she expects it to increase as Christmas Eve nears.

“I try to do as much as I can as fast as I can,” she said.

Garcia is part of a winter seasonal delivery force deployed to meet customer demand. UPS expects to deliver about 120 million parcels this week or 6 percent more than last year.
