  • Check the Background of Candidates

When you meet a stranger, wherever and whenever it might be, you probably assume that the person is sincere and honest and have good intentions. If you do not take this position then you may end up being paranoid of all strangers, which is not normal or healthy, as it leads to unnecessary anxiety. Naturally and logically, if you look closely at crime statistics you can see ample proof that there are lots of people having malevolent desires, but considering the total population, they represent a small minority. The supposition that people are honorable, responsible and honest individuals is the foundation of our criminal justice system, which always assumes a person’s innocence until their guilt can be conclusively proven.

A number of people have the difficult task of evaluating strangers on a regular basis, whether as candidates for employment, or as renters for apartments and houses. If that is your task, you need to be a bit more careful than the average person when it comes to assuming innocence. You may have had bad experiences from the past, and these makes you more cautious. Perhaps you are unusually fortunate and have the ability to “read” a person’s character and honesty from their demeanor or facial expressions, body language during an interview or using some other knack. However, you can’t always totally trust that subjective ability, can you? Are you willing to base decisions on a feeling? But of course not. If a job applicant is relatively new to town you should be extra cautious, since the person may have moved to escape some problems with debts or the police. However, a local native raised in your town could also be a risk, having unpaid debts, or is way behind in his alimony payments, for example. Clearly only one certain and positive way exists to completely be assured that the individual in question has no unsavory past is to order a Background Check on the person in question. A Background Check will allow you to conclusively find out if they have ever been incarcerated, or if they have had major financial problems such as large unpaid debts. Background checking of a candidate should also include a Criminal Background Check based on a national database. A Criminal Check may even disclose that the person is a registered sex offender, something nobody wants in their town, let alone working for you. Rental managers or personnel managers want to know about these types of previous problems so they can avert a potentially costly and embarrassing situation.
