Childhood fun leads to adult business

Baking comes naturally to Hazel Armstrong.

The owner of Tastee Creations Bakery has loved baking since she was 10 years old. What started as an effort to help out with a church bake sale in 1992 grew into a home business in 1993 and a store in 2002. When she moved the business inside Smith’s Red and White in Dortches three years ago, Armstrong continued to provide quality treats for everyone’s taste buds.

As the years have gone by, Armstrong’s love of baking hasn’t waned, but she said one of her favorite parts of her business now is decorating the bakery’s candies, cookies and cakes.

“I prefer doing regular children’s cakes. We do them all, but I think I get more satisfaction out of doing the children’s cakes. Just seeing the kids excited and happy on their birthday or whatever the occasion is, it just lights their faces up,” Armstrong said.

Q: What services or products do you provide?

A: We are pretty much a full-service bakery — breads, cakes, pies, cookies and special snacks like cheese straws and lady fingers.

Q: Who are your key leaders?

A: Pretty much me right now and my son, Colby Armstrong, my manager.

Q: How many people do you employ?

A: Five

Q: When were you established?

A: April 1993.

Q: What’s your business philosophy?

A: We endeavor to provide excellence and consistency in products through our passion for baking, creativity, tender loving care, superior ingredients and the best customer service.

Q: What makes your business unique?

A: The old-fashioned quality of the products.

Q: Why did you pick Dortches as a place to do business?

A: It is just where I have lived for the past 24 years. I just felt like Rocky Mount didn’t have true full-service bakery, so I just wanted to bring one to the area. Even though we are grocery store-related, it is not your typical grocery store bakery because of the fact that we are independent and we’ve got our own set of standards that we set for a high-quality bakery.
