  • Portabella restaurant in bankruptcy filing

CORPUS CHRISTI Portabella Italian Grill and Seafood and its associated companies have filed for bankruptcy.

The restaurant, on South Padre Island Drive near Old Brownsville Road, closed recently. The restaurant opened in 2006.

Documents filed with the Southern District of Texas show three Portabella companies — Portabella Ventures, Portabella Holdings and Portabella Management — filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in March and Abdulkarim Mahzoon-Hagheghi, owner of the restaurant, was listed as the managing partner.

Attempts on Monday to reach Mahzoon-Hagheghi were unsuccessful. Calls to his attorney, Viviana S. Cavada, were not returned.

Chapter 7 bankruptcy does not involve the filing of a repayment plan. The bankruptcy trustee gathers and sells the debtor’s nonexempt assets and uses the proceeds to pay claim holders.

Portabella Ventures, which did business as the restaurant, filed for bankruptcy on March 29. It listed liabilities of almost $52,000 and assets of $15,000.

Portabella Holdings’ bankruptcy was filed on March 1. It listed about $828,000 in liabilities and about $585,000 in assets.

Bankruptcy also was filed March 29 for Portabella Management, also listed as doing business as Portabella Italian Grill and Seafood. It lists liabilities of about $52,000 and no assets.
