Vertical Response, known for its email marketing system that serves over 100,000 customers (many of them small businesses), just announced that it has acquired the Roost social media tool.
Roost, based in San Francisco, allows you to update your social media accounts (currently Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook) from one dashboard. Theres a built-in calendar to schedule and publish updates in advance.

While there are other tools out there that do similar functions, whats interesting about Roost is that you can schedule social media updates like marketing campaigns. In a campaign, you can schedule updates to go out over a specified period of time up to 40 updates over a period of 30 days. So, for instance, if you wanted to promote a special offer with a series of informational tweets and also discounts, you could set that up in Roost.
Roost also gives you some analytics about your social media impact. For instance you can measure engagement with your social media updates. You

When a small business owner comes to me experiencing frustration with social media, I admit, I’m a little confused. Why? Because I can’t help but think that small business owners are the segment of the business population that is most suited for social media success. I mean, who knows how to talk to their audience better than a small business owner? Who understands customers’ needs better than a small business owner? Who lives and breathes the same everyday struggles? No one.
But then I realize that that’s not where small business owners find themselves in trouble. The trouble spots for SMBs are much different. Often they’re in the implementation of social media.
Below are four social media mistakes common to small business owners and how you can maneuver around them. Because once you do, you’ve got this social media thing down.

Social media doesn’t work when it exists as its own island or when it’s fragmented from everything else you’re doing. In order to truly b

PR with search and social media in mind. When creating PR for your business or for a small business client online, it’s helpful to remember that while some things stay the same other things are very different. Beyond th

The other day I was talking with a colleague about marketing, social media and time. She was marveling at all that I have on my plate and wondering out loud about how I manage to get it all done. I told her that I actually created a social media calendar.
Let’s face it. There are multitudes of opportunities to participate online – and I’m not just talking about social networks. There are article submission websites, industry-specific communities, blogs, video, e-newsletters and more. When you choose to interact in a variety of ways, how do you maintain a consistent level of participation? Like any business system, you have to create a structure and live within it.
In my own case, I found that I was not as consistent as I should be. It happens to many of us. We get busy and end up doing the minimum – Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter. However, that is insufficient. While it can be challenging, it is crucial to have consistent participation so that you continue to establish your brand.
There are some basic steps to establishing the system you are going to use.
1. Decide
